Being a transfer student, I arrived at UCLA not expecting to come across some of the challenges that I have faced along the way. At my community college, it felt as though I was a “big fish in a little pond” where I would be one of the few students who would participate in class, and I got to UCLA and felt a wave of insecurity come across me, and did not know how to deal with it. I still come across some potholes in my path here, but here are a few pieces of advice I wish I had before I started my transition to UCLA.
1. Don’t think any less of yourself because you are a transfer student.

Just because you are a transfer student does not mean you did not work as hard as the four year students to get where you are. Remind yourself of this always, even if you hear outside noise telling you otherwise.
2. People are going to be competitive, don't let it interfere with your mindset!

When I got to UCLA, I was not expecting other students to be so competitive. I let it get to me during my first quarter, which did nothing but interfere with my wellbeing. Don’t focus on the negativity of others, use that time to further yourself and get ahead!
3. Go to office hours!

Don’t be afraid to talk to your professor. I know it may seem intimidating being a single student in a class of 200, but get to know him/her. This will not only make participating in the classroom environment more comfortable for you, but allows for more opportunity to clarify things that you don’t understand.
4. Get Involved!

Getting involved is a great way to meet friends and make connections through campus. The more people you know, the more you are able to have access to tips and help around campus.
